CALLIOPE
Lyon
The language of musique in the feminine
Calliope is a women's choir created by Régine Théodoresco in 1996. It shines today amongst the professional choirs in Rhone-Alpes region with a rare modern and contemporary repertoire which does not exclude other aesthetics. An ensemble with a variable effective, Calliope fits the number of its singers - from 9 to 20 - according to the repertoire : 20th Century religious music or pre-romantisism, baroque or classical as well as secular music from every century, seeking on each occasion to refine the cultural identity.
The Caliope ensemble is very attached to the poetry and the language of music, and very naturally took the name of the Muse of eloquence, to whom the singers pay homage throughout their secular programmes, expressing each word of the text with delicacy, in a subtle blend of colours.
A feature which clearly expresses this love of the language : each poem set to music is read aloud before being sung. This original approach has been honoured by the Ministre de la Culture (winner of the Ministerial prize at the National competition in Tours in 1998).
Calliope performs widely in France as they do abroad : International Festival in Besancon, Printemps Musical de Pérouges, Eté musical Loire in the Rhone-Alpes region, Vieux Lyon festival, Divina Musica... They have recorded four discs, including a rare volume devoted to Florent Scmitt.
Régine Théodoresco, musical director of the Caliope ensemble became, at the tender age of 20, one of the youngest music teachers of her generation. She has received the title of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the Ministre de la Culture in recognition of her career. She divides her time between teaching in the Conservatoire in Lyon and at the CEFEDEM Rhone-Alpes, and choir and orchestral conducting as the musical director of "Le Cantrel de Lyon". A member of the "A Coeur Joie" movement and of the Agence Musique and Dance Rhone-Alpes, she is often invited to judge many international competitions.
