Unclassifiable unlimited vocal world

Rajaton is a vocal sextet beyond compare, in the true sense of the term.. Created in 1997 by six singers from very different backgrounds (from the Sibelius Academy to the pop/jazz Conservatoire in Helsinki) its target is to put Finnish music in the foreground of the international a cappella music scene.

They have hit this target. From the very first notes, one is struck by the virtuosity of the singers and the unique colour of the ensemble. With or without microphone, their voices - although very individual - fuse together, richly and warmly, and give the impression of vibrating as one, without any limit ("rajaton" in Finnish). Whether they are singing in Finnish, in English or even occasionally in medieval Irish, thrills are guaranteed...

But their enchantment comes first from the originality of their musical field : Rajaton only interprets original compositions, or the commissioned works by highly talented Finnish or foreign composers or arrangers. Their repertoire, a blend of eclectic influences, reaches from sacred contemporary music to vocal choreography of a Finnish poet, popular Finnish songs and new adaptations of folk music. This all mixes into a profoundly original world of sound, between scat and pop, and which has its place in places as diverse as jazz clubs, churches or music-halls.

Since their debut abroad as guests at the Cork festival in Ireland in 2000, Rajaton has given concerts in Canada, in France, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, and Tanzania. They took the first prize at the international competition in Tampere (Finland). Their resordings "Nova" 2000, "Boundless" 2001, and "Sanat" 2002 have been very successful far beyond the Finnish frontier.
