JOYFUL COMPANY OF SINGERS United Kingdom
English traditions serving today's music
The Joyful Company of Singers is worthy of the title. Founded in 1988 it has rapidly risen to the highest echelons of European vocal ensembles carrying off an impressive list of prizes in the biggest international competitions : Tours (Grand Prix and the prize for the interpretation of... French music) Llangollen (Choir of the World) Arezzo (Grand Prix) etc. They perform regularly across the United Kingdom, and in all the great festivals - notably the Proms in London - also in a series of concerts for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. They have often toured abroad : Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Russia. In 2001 they travelled for the first time to the USA, giving well received concerts at Stanford University, Los Angeles, San Diego and as the guest choir at the Convetion of American choir conductors association.
The vitality of the Joyful Company is equal only to the extent of its repertoire, from the Renaissance to the - very - present day, travelling via baroque music on period instruments. They have presented several first performances by some of the best British composers, from the opera Ruth by Lennox Berkeley - with the City of London Sinfonia - to the complete works of Percy Grainger (with Chandos). Other than this their impressive list of recordings cover compositions from Jonathan Harvey, Francis Poulenc, Gustav Holst or Samuel Barber, to the CD "A Garland for Linda" realised with Sir Paul McCartney and eight other British composers in aid of cancer research. Amongst their recent television performances are the music for the successful series "Viking Blood" and the opening of the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
Peter Broadbent is today one of the most respected figures in the choral music world and amongst British conductors, notable for his stylistic demands, the wealth of experience and his attachment to contemporary music. His career, like his repertoire, covers wide and eclectic musical horizons. He has directed the London Mozart Players, the Divertimenti Chamber Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Southern Sinfonia and the BBC Singers, and he is frequently heard on Radio 3 and on Classic FM. He is a much sought after personality for the jury of international and european competitions, and for his choral master classes in Europe, the USA, South Africa or in Canada. An educationalist beyond compare, he has established and directed a series of courses for choral directors for the British Association of Choral Conductors.
