Australia

Discover a New World of music

Gondwana Voices is a choir composed of young Australian singers aged from 10 to 16. Created by Lyn Williams in 1997, it comes originally from the Sydney Children's choir and is the answer to a simple but ambitious project : to give an opportunity to the most talented young singers, from every State and Territory in Australia an opportunity to develop their musical potential and perform choral music at the highest level. The choir commissions many new works each year and most of its repertoire is contemporary Australian Choral Music. The method of working is particularly intensive : in January of each year the young musicians find themselves under the enlightened direction of various choral conductors, composers, musicians and artists for two weeks' relentless work resulting in a big concert in the national Conservatory of Music in Sydney.

Magical and enthusiastic, the musical atmosphere and the energy that is generated in their concerts simply charms their audience and fully justifies their worldwide reputation which qualifies them as a "national treasure". Their repertoire is enriched each year with contemporary Australian compositions and notably includes the interpretation of works by John Adam (On the Transmigration of Souls) and of Christopher Gordon (Peace on Earth) inspired by the tragic events of the 11th September, which they sang at the Sydney festival.

Gondwana is regularly asked to collaborate with notable national groups such as the Sydney Symphony and the Sydney Philharmonic Choirs, but also various major international events like the Songbridge festival, the 5th worldwide symposium of choral music in Rotterdam or America Cantat 2003, where they were honoured guests this spring in Mexico. They have recorded 2 CD's, New Light New Hope for ABC classics and Voices of Godwana.

Lyn Williams figures amongst the best children's choir directors in the world. She has founded the Sydney Children's Choir in 1989 and the national Australian children's choir GONDWANA VOICES. She regularly conducts various large groups such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the National Chamber Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony, etc. She is responsible for the musical direction of big national events like the Centenary of the Federation or the Rugby World Cup in 2003. Lyn Williams is a Churchill Fellow and also a composer. Her choral music is published by Boosey and Hawkes, New York. She has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in recognition of her contribution to Australian choral music and her work with children's choirs.
