Eva Female Vocal Quartet EVA FEMALE VOCAL QUARTET
Bulgaria

The quintessential mystery of Bulgarian voices

Eva Female Quartet is an astonishing group of hand-picked young women from the heart of the famous female voice choir "The mystery of Bulgarian Voices". Behind the brilliantly coloured traditional costumes that they wear, these four soloists enjoy crossing frontiers between traditional melodies and contemporary music, preferring eastern melodies with western harmony. They have developed a quartet with ever changing dimensions, where dissonance dissolves into harmony, carried by bewitching voices with rich intonation and with ever more dazzling virtuosity.

Created in 1996 by their conductor Milen Ivanov who qualified at the national music Academy in Sofia, the ensemble is composed of four women who brilliantly represent the traditional schools of music all over Bulgaria in which they trained. They experiment with a repertoire that is both ethnographical and traditional rashly revisited by the most creative bulgarian jazz musicians and composers. Also, the founder of new bulgarian jazz in the 1960's Veselin Nikolov has composed pieces for the Quartet in the traditions of ancient music, while Antoni Donchev, a new generation of jazzman uses his talent freely with folksongs.

The singers interpret traditional songs, notably sacred Slavonic music, alongside popular Bulgarian composers such as Filip Kutev, Krasimir Kiurchiiski, Stefan Mutafchiev, or Nikolai Kaufman, they express modernity with the exceptional atmosphere which is created by their voices. They have enchanted audiences with their programme at concerts in Bulgaria and across the world : Germany, Poland, France, Japan, Greece... Eva Female Quartet have made two recordings : "Bulgarian Folklore gifts" and "Harmonies".
